The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Not too long ago, the Met was under fire for its distasteful theme for the annual Met Gala.
While the exhibit itself was outstanding, to say that using it as the theme for their gala was in poor taste is the understatement of the year.
The theme of this year’s exhibit was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and was supposed to be held in reverence of the Catholic movement throughout the years.
But instead of promoting this exhibit to be an ode to the Catholic faith and history of the Church, the museum promoted it as the theme of their gala—where many Godless celebrities adorned themselves in symbols of religion and wealth in the name of fashion.
For example, Chadwick Boseman showed up in an outfit donned entirely with crucifixes.
Pop icon Rihanna decided to take a more advert approach, and came dressed in “sexy papal garbs.”
But none shocked as much as Lana Del Ray, who showed up on the red carpet sporting a chest piece with a heart of swords in a sinful twist off the traditional symbol of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Sorrows.
While many are boycotting the museum in response to their disrespect of sacred elements, the exhibit itself will only be in the United States for a short while (until October 8, 2018) and still should not be passed up.
Garments from centuries of past Popes and members of the Catholic clericy are found here, as well as jewels and other precious Catholic artifacts, truly showcasing the awesome power of the medieval church and beyond.
Despite this year’s controversy, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City boasts an extraordinary collection that any lover of art and history must see.
Some of the most famous works of art of all time are on display, such as The Death of Socrates by Jacques-Louis David, The Water Lily Pond by Claude Monet, and the Temple of Dendur from ancient Egypt.
New York is a cultural center in and of itself and offers countless opportunities for you and your family to spend time together enjoying the many different cultures in this city.
