Midwest
Okay, maybe the Midwest is not the first place you’d think of to find fine wine. Far from the ordinary, the midwestern states have long been known to offer beautiful resorts and plenty of outdoor entertainment.
The Great Lakes region offers several wineries, like those in Ohio along Lake Erie. The area has a small-town, mid-century retro feel while providing contemporary amenities.
Some, like Harpersfield Vineyard, are modeled after something you might see in the French countryside and offer year-round opportunities for tastings and delicious snacks. Is there anything better than enjoying a fine glass of red wine and a cheese plate next to a roaring stone fireplace? We think not.
Missouri, really? Yes, it’s true, Missouri offers some fine wines and boasts over eighty vineyards throughout the state.
In fact, the state has a longer history of wine production than many which are better known. German settlers arriving in the nineteenth century started vineyards along the Missouri River while settling in the area.
For a trip back in time to those days, visit Stone Hill Winery in Hermann, a great stop on a weekend getaway due to its close proximity to St. Louis. The winery is over a hundred years old and as peaceful and relaxing as the name suggests.
