Mammoth Caverns, Kentucky
Kentucky’s Mammoth Caves National Park contains the longest cave system in the world – at least that’s been discovered so far. Once you see the majesty of the caves and surrounding areas, you’ll understand where it got its name.
Tours allow visitors to explore enormous chambers with impressive formations. Take a look at cascading stalactites forming a “waterfall” of mineral structures, walk through its labyrinth of passageways, and see where past explorers left their mark with signatures scrawled into the walls by candlelight.
Most of the pathways are lit with electric lights, but visitors can take special tours into parts of the caverns that have not been modernized for a more thorough and authentic spelunking experience.
Part of the area’s popularity is not just the cave system itself, but the beautiful scenery surrounding the cavern.
As a National Park, thousands of acres are an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. From hiking to fishing and boating in the rivers, to horseback or bike riding on the many trails, this is the perfect oasis for a weekend getaway.
