The Thurman Cafe
183 Thurman Ave.
Columbus, OH 43206
Ohio…
Never thought I’d live to see the day I lived in the state of Ohio.
Being surrounded by Cleveland Indians fans and constantly having to explain to indignant Buckeye fans that just because I’m from Michigan does not mean I’m a fan of that terrible liberal institution from Ann Arbor isn’t exactly what I had in mind.
Alas, here I was, fighting for liberty in yet another state. And boy does Ohio need a heavy dose of freedom.
But, I digress…
We are here to talk about good beer and good food. And I sure hit a homerun visiting The Thurman Cafe, a staple in Columbus.
Known for their ¾ lb burgers, this place often has dinner waits that last over an hour. In fact, I once tried to visit here and had to give up. So when I was commissioned with the task of visiting and writing the review…
…It didn’t take much arm-twisting.
After an early morning of helping a friend move, the wife and I decided to hit up Thurman Cafe for lunch. I can tell you, for sure, that lunch is a much better time to come to this joint. We had no wait. Immediate seating.
The beer selection was not overwhelming, but good enough. I had Great Lakes’ Oktoberfest. While it isn’t one of my favorite beers they make, it’s still a top quality beer.
By the way, for anyone who doesn’t know, Great Lakes Brewing Company is based out of Cleveland and is an exceptional brewery. If you are ever in Ohio and have a high standard for the beer you drink, it’s a safe bet you’d enjoy something from Great Lakes.
If you’re a “Bud Light only” guy, it’s time to get with the program and start drinking good beer, like the kind from Great Lakes Brewing. Just sayin.
Having looked at the menu beforehand, we already knew what we were going to order.
The Thurmanator.
This burger is a monster.
There is no way I could’ve finished this thing on my own, hence why I was happy my wife came along to help.
Here’s the layout of this burger: bottom bun, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle, banana peppers, 12oz burger, bacon, cheddar cheese, another 12oz burger, sautéed mushrooms and onions, sliced ham, mozzarella cheese, American cheese, top bun.
Oh, and in case you’re still hungry, it also comes with fries.
So does it taste as good as it looks?
Most definitely.
The only problem I had was my mouth was not big enough to take a full bite and experience all the flavors of this bad boy. It was definitely a knife and fork kind of burger.
I finished my half, my wife couldn’t finish hers, so she now has leftovers for lunch for the next three days.
Then again, they may magically end up disappearing by some other cause…
Thurman Cafe definitely has character and fits right up there with the top places to eat in Columbus.
