Poppy’s Pizza and Grill

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon when my wife and I decided to go wander into the Rocky Mountains to see what we could find.
We found ourselves at Estes Park, which is the gateway into Rocky Mountain National Park. Naturally, it had a certain “touristy” feel to it. After spending some time in the National Park and popping in and out of local stores, we took the recommendation from one store owner and checked out Poppy’s Pizza and Grill.
What attracted us to Poppy’s was the promise of gourmet pizza and burgers and an excellent beer menu.
Before we ordered food, I ordered an Autumn Maple Brown Ale from The Bruery, a brewery out of California. This beer was delicious—a mix between a fall pumpkin beer and a Belgian. Easily one my favorite beers.
For our meal, my wife went with the special, a smothered burrito with a mixture of their house-made chorizo and beef. I went with something a little more unique: the Rocky Mountain Pizza.
Now, before you get any crazy ideas, no, this was not a pizza with Rocky Mountain Oysters or anything else strange like that on it.
The Rocky Mountain Pizza consisted of a garlic and olive oil sauce, topped with cream cheese, smoked trout, capers, and red onion.
And this pizza was delicious. I don’t think I’ve ever had fish on a pizza before and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it turned out to be awesome. I had made the right choice!
I also had a taste of my wife’s burrito which was also quite delicious.
So if you ever find yourself in Estes Park, Colorado, I highly recommend you stopping by at Poppy’s Pizza and Grill. The food is great, the prices are outstanding, and there is nothing better than supporting a locally owned restaurant.
