Every year, tourists flock to Tibet, shoveling money for visas and required tour group fees. The worst part is that all of that money goes toward funding the oppressive Chinese government and their state-sponsored tourism industry.
A lesser known alternative to Tibet is Western Sichuan, China. Sichuan province borders Tibet, and on its western regions it features thousands of years of history. The entire region is still culturally Tibetan. And the food is fantastic.
Best of all, you don’t need any permits, you are free to travel outside a tour group, and most of your money goes to support the local people.
