5) Stick Your Toes in some of the Most Unique Sand on Earth
Maui, Kauai, and Oahu have wonderful beaches, but it’s only on the Big Island where you can see Hawaii’s iconic volcanic black sand and green sand beaches.
At Papakolea Beach (close to South Point), you will find a kind of beach that only exists in four places in the entire world… a beach with green sand. It will take a vigorous hike (or paying locals $10-$20 to give you a ride there), but it is a rare treat.
And while there are several black sand beaches on the Big Island, Punalu’u Beach is the only one you can drive to. Don’t miss the Hawaiian sea turtles basking in the sun and frolicking in the water at Punalu’u either.
