MEXICO
Just one country accounts for half of all the Americans killed worldwide since 2009. No surprise, that country is Mexico.
Drug lords are dragging the nation into a downward spiral of horror and human suffering as they attempt to out-terrorize each other by bombing children’s birthday parties, hanging mutilated bodies from bridges, and tossing decapitated heads into busy town squares.
As recently as a decade ago, the most popular American vacation destinations of Cabo and Cancun were considered remote and safe tourist outposts, far away from the raging narco wars. Unfortunately, that is no longer true.
The drug wars have crept into the same neighborhoods where American tourists lounge on the beach. Cancun’s homicide numbers have skyrocketed from 165 in 2016 to 259 in 2017. Just last month, the resort town saw 14 murders in one deadly 36-hour window.
Generally these are drug lords killing others in the drug trade. Tourists are not the intended target. But…
…tourists have other issues to worry about in Mexico too.
You may not be safe even in the luxurious confines of your all-inclusive resort. The U.S. State Department has warned about a rash of Americans being poisoned by tainted or spiked alcohol. One 20-year-old Wisconsin girl died just last year after taking a single shot of tequila that had been poisoned.
