COVID-19 crushed the tourism industry, leaving many destinations barely able to survive.
But with summer travel picking up steam, cities and resorts have pulled out all the stops to lure travelers back.
Except Hawaii who actually begged airlines to use their power to keep people away – but why?
Well, according to Maui County mayor Michael Victorino, they just aren’t ready for the influx of travelers.
So while most cities are competing for tourists and offering all the post-COVID-19 perks to persuade them to choose THEIR destination out of the thousands of others…
…Victorino is doing just the opposite.
In fact, during a press conference, he all but told travelers to get out – even asking airlines to get involved and “pause” flying in as many tourists.
Business Insider reported:
“I have been talking with different airlines and … we’re asking for just a pause, if you want to use that term,” Maui County mayor Michael Victorino said during a press conference on June 29.
“We don’t have the authority to say stop, but we’re asking the powers to be to help us.”
Is he out of his mind?
People are actually CHOOSING to visit Maui and he’s turning down their business?!
And just what does he want the “powers to be” to do exactly?
Well according to Victorino, he thinks if airlines block out seats to limit the number of passengers, it will help solve the problem.
US News reported:
“Maui’s main airport in Kahului is also overcrowded, and its emergency services are taxed, Victorino said.
“It’s the airlift that really drives all of this,” he said, using an airline industry term for transporting people and cargo. “Without airlift, people don’t come.”
Victorino said he has asked airlines to voluntarily limit seats to Maui, but declined to say which he spoke to. The companies are under no obligation to do as he asks, and it’s unclear if any would.”
Wow, you just can’t make this stuff up!
I mean what mayor actually turns away business from his city?!
But given the fact this is happening in Hawaii, none of this should be a surprise.
During COVID-19, Hawaiian authorities enacted the strictest “safety” restrictions in the entire country.
They locked people up in their hotel rooms to “quarantine” and wouldn’t even let them leave to go for a walk.
And if you happened to get locked out of your room – and dared go to the front desk to get a new key – you could be reported to the authorities.
So basically people paid for a vacation… just to spend 14 days in their hotel room.
Yeah, no thanks.
Some travelers in Hawaii decided to risk it, but sadly it didn’t end well.
Like the man who was arrested simply for walking alone on the beach.
Apparently, a man walking by himself on a deserted beach is a COVID-19 risk to others.
It’s no wonder Hawaii made Proud American Traveler’s list of the top 4 worst states for freedom lovin’ Americans to visit.
If Hawaii continues to turn away business and hurt their own economy, it’s their own people who will suffer the most.
