When politicians urged UK residents to travel locally this summer and help the local economy instead of traveling abroad, they weren’t prepared for the chaos that was set to unleash.
From beaches trashed with nearly 33 tons of waste, to natural resources being trounced on by “wild” campers, the UK is feeling the backlash of a staycation nightmare.
And while locals are used to having affordable options for a weekend away, accommodations have now doubled – and even tripled – in price. Not to mention scammers taking advantage of those wanting to travel by offering fake travel options and websites.
As a result, local officials are scrambling to clean up the mess – and fed up citizens are taking matters into their own hands.
Of course, government officials rarely actually think things through before they unleash their “brilliant” ideas onto the masses.
So… discouraging everyone from leaving the country and telling them to play locally?
… I mean what did they think was going to happen by essentially mandating your entire country to take a “staycation”?
Did they really think everyone would social distance in their masks and not trash their surroundings?
Ha. Come on.
What did they expect when a bunch of people who have been cooped up for the past few months are finally set “free”?
I’ll tell ya.
You get 67 million people all trying to take the same public transportation and frequent the same beaches all at the same time.
And of course, massive chaos.
If the whole point is to promote “social distancing,” then how is packing thousands of people onto a crowded beach going to ensure people stay 6ft apart?
In fact, so many people were stuffing themselves like sardines onto trains that officials were forced to enforce “crowd control measures”.
And with an early heat wave, people flooded the beaches (all at the same time) and left behind everything from trash to soiled diapers, forcing locals to take matters into their own hands.
“I finally snapped watching the rubbish and bins overflow,” says Coral Evans. She’s founded a group, Leave No Trace Brighton, that engages with locals on Instagram to coordinate near-daily beach cleanup operations.
“Brighton has always had an issue with beach visitors leaving rubbish, but at the end of June, the seafront became a destination for people coming out of lockdown,” she says. “As the masses descended, the rubbish being discarded on the beach increased exponentially.”
Not willing to pay the ridiculous high fees for accommodations, many locals decided to take up “wild camping” – which essentially means they camped wherever they wanted.
Although illegal in some areas, people didn’t care.
They’d often pitch a tent and then leave all their trash and items behind – expecting someone else to clean up after them.
And of course, large groups of campers partied together causing massive problems with drugs and alcohol as drunk campers drove their vehicles into forests infuriating rural residents.
“There’s been damage to the forests and individual trees, including digging for campfires and toilets to uncontrolled fires from campfires or barbecues.
“Pollution and harm to wildlife can come from litter, including discarded equipment, as well as people openly going to the toilet. Irresponsible use of alcohol and drugs can make matters worse, including driving vehicles in the forest. It’s also important to remember the worry and disturbance it can cause to rural communities.”
What an absolute nightmare.
Freedom Always Trumps Tyranny
It seems politicians have yet to learn–you can’t micro-manage people.
If people had the freedom to actually choose how to spend their summer vacation and travel to the country of their choice like Spain (a hotspot destination for UK residents), many would have ventured out.
Instead, you have a group of hot and cranky locals who are dying for any type of vacation and will take whatever they can get.
Sadly, as a result, it’s the local residents who are feeling the brunt of the chaos thanks to the politicians and their restrictions.
But the same is true all around the world – 2020 summer vacations are an actual living nightmare.
