“America’s Historic Triangle”
This great trip offers a wide variety of experiences for the whole family, all within a short driving distance.
The three cities of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg, Virginia offer perhaps the greatest bang for your buck for the whole family to enjoy. And before the kids tell you they don’t want to go see boring old historical stuff, there are plenty of fun things for them to enjoy within a short distance.
Jamestown is the site of the first colony in the U.S. and families can explore replicas of the original town and Native American villages, with lots of hands-on activities for the kids. And the Revolutionary War battlefield and museums at Yorktown offer an up-close history lesson where the kids can explore period uniforms, ships, and cannons.
Williamsburg is home to an interactive colonial town, perfect for kids to explore. They can experience what it was like to live as a child in colonial times with games, archaeological digs, and farm animals. The town offers a taste of colonial food in its eateries, and also a few shops where the kids can pick up a souvenir toy or some colonial-era candy.
With all the history to explore in the area, there are also a few places that will get the kids excited with the promise of a visit once the history lesson is done.
Busch Gardens Williamsburg has the rides and coasters the kids are looking for, but also offers some great shopping and dining representing different European countries for mom and dad. Just down the road is the largest water park in the mid-Atlantic; Water Country U.S.A.
And if that doesn’t excite the little ones (and wear them out so you can relax), there is Great Wolf Lodge. This resort boasts themed lodge-style rooms that completely cater to the kids. And even better? The lodge includes a huge indoor water park of its own – perfect for a stay if the weather doesn’t cooperate for part of your trip.
