Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA
Known as America’s most historic prison, this 1829 penitentiary took solitary confinement to a whole new level, isolating inmates from all human contact.
Inmates ate alone, slept alone, and were made to wear a sheet over their head anytime they left their cells. And that doesn’t even touch on the penitentiary’s severest punishments! Prisoners were often chained up in excruciating ways.
Some of these residents are said to still roam the halls and people have reported hearing wailing and seeing shadowy figures.
Eastern State Penitentiary offers daytime tours and is made into a haunted house on fall nights. There are also school field trips available to learn about famous prisoners such as Al Capone.
