1) Monument Avenue (Richmond, Virginia)
Virginia’s capital is full of history and a major destination for any tourist to the area. Also the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, Richmond is not only home to the Confederate War Museum, but several monuments honoring Confederate leaders. Most prominently, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson’s statues stand tall on one of Richmond’s main streets. These monuments are free to visit and within walking distance from both the Virginia Historical Museum and the Confederate War Museum, which offer a wealth of educational experience for the entire family. Unfortunately, residents in the city and beyond are protesting for the removal of these Civil War monuments due to their “controversial” nature. In particular, Robert E. Lee’s statue is in danger of removal, so making a trip to the heart of Virginia to see these statues is a must.
